Quotes are special to me. Reading and listening to quotes helped give me strength and courage when I was really sick. I think it is helpful to read someone else's words, take time to understand the meaning, and apply the message to your own life.
Two years ago in March, I was diagnosed with Guillian-Barre Syndrome. This time of year was pivotal in my life because I had to dig deep inside of myself and strengthen my desire to fight toward recovery. Reflecting on my journey, I am so grateful for the love and strength from my friends and family who supported me through my whole illness.
Flush with confidence, I push the call button, and as a forceful rush of air grazes my face, I stroll into the Packard at El Camino (PEC) Unit of Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital. Involuntary tears welling in my eyes catch me off guard as I tunnel my gaze to the tan-speckled carpet below my feet. Confidence and purpose forgotten, I can’t seem to lift my stare from my sneakers. Noticing my hesitation, my mom brushes her fingers against my hand, her touch reminding me I’m not alone. While my trip back to PEC stirs uneasiness, I know I need to be here. As spring approaches, I remember the devastating day I found out I had GBS. In gratitude for all those who helped me, and since I know there are people, right now, sick and scared, I gladly deliver hand-made, welcome cards with inspirational quotes to current and future PEC patients.
